Professional Instruction
Dr. McCarty offers a two-day course for providers interested in learning a triage system for treating orofacial pain. This periodic course is held near the DFW airport or can be arranged at other locations as needed. Dr. McCarty is one of a small number of providers in the world who have made their living treating orofacial pain. Most providers continue to run a general dental practice making their income by providing fillings, crowns, implants, cosmetics, orthodontics, etc. while they experiment with Orofacial Pain, or they practice in a school residency program setting where a successful treatment outcome is not a requirement for growing the practice. Dr. McCarty makes his living at the successful treatment of orofacial pain and likes to help other achieve success. There definitely are some clients who remain a challenge, however with a successful triage system even those individuals are usually helped and glad they came.
Please contact the office if you would like to put together a group. There is a six-doctor minimal; assistants are welcome as well.
A rough outline of the course is as follows:
- Reflex testing: Dr. McCarty first was introduced to reflex testing at Dr. Olmos's first mini residency program in 2003 where Dr. John Beck demonstrated 3 easy tests. In February of 2006 at a conference in San Diego, Dr. Beck again spoke and spent a lot of time in the lobby testing a long line of people using his more complex testing system. Dr. McCarty remained in the lobby with Dr. Beck making notes the entire time. After the conference he came home and implemented a more complex system that very week. Dr. Olmos in 2008 put together a more complex reflex testing course which Dr. McCarty attended. Dr. McCarty was interested to see how his testing had morphed in a different direction than the one Dr. Olmos was teaching, even though they both had originated with Dr. Beck. Dr. McCarty clearly teaches his own version of reflex testing that is very useful for finding the source of symptoms. Finding the source of a patient's symptoms is key to treatment success.
- Reviewing and categorizing craniofacial pain issues: In 2006-7 Dr. McCarty enrolled in the first AACP Mini-Residency. He joined the third year as an instructor and continued for ten years becoming very acquainted with the teachings and techniques of many of the AACP founders. By combining his own version of Reflex Testing with the other didactic and teachings techniques learned in the Mini-Residency, he has developed his own system of success. He thanks the following Mini-Residency instructors for their friendship and input into his career: Gerald Murphy, Robert Talley, Steven Kilpatrick, Clifton Simmons, Wesley Shankland, Jamison Spencer, Larry Tilley, Don Warren, Ron Auvenshine, and Dennis Brenkert. He also has been thankful for the mentorship and courses of many others that formed his approach to practice: Steve Olmos, Mariano Rocabado, Noshir Mehta, John Remmers, Charles Holt, Brendan Stack, Jack Haden, Barry Glassman, Brock Rondeau, Richard Pertes, Jeanne Bailey, Cris Simmons, and others.
- Analyzing objective data. The course discusses how to make sense of the data collected, and what is most important. Subjects discussed are: Palpation, Range of Motion, CBCT interpretation, oral interpretation, diagnostic injections, and incorporating sleep.
- Formalizing and ordering a treatment plan that addresses the objective findings: Having a triage system greatly helps day to day staying on track with these complex patients. Without a system it is easy to get lost in what to do. Dr. McCarty can help you with his system.
- Treatment process and finishing well. Treatment injections are discussed, follow up appointments, appliance selection and adjustments are discussed.
